SHEIKH ZAYED
COFFEE CUP MOSAIC

In 2018 the UAE celebrated The Year of Zayed, commemorating the founder of the nation on its 46th national day. I was approached to create and implement a huge coffee-cup mosaic of His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, that would be a Guinness world record for the largest ever illustration made up of cups of coffee.  The coffee-cup mosaic consists of 16,790 individual coffee cups; 1 for every day, of every year of the UAE. This giant coffee portrait was created in 5 different shades (or strengths) of coffee, representing the five pillars of Islam.

About this project  Turning an idea into a record-breaking art piece was an unforgettable experience. The portrait mosaic was built by 60 residents of a labour camp, of multiple nationalities, over the course of 5 hours. From creating the initial design to managing multiple teams and mixing barrels of different shades of coffee; to a grid that would explain to non-english speakers where to place each cup, the whole process and team effort was inspirational and rewarding. The Middle East Guinness World record commission remained present throughout, and the world record was granted at completion. To my knowledge, the record still stands, and there are at least 90 people who will never look at a polystyrene cup of coffee the same way again.
